Winter Activities for the Non-skier
Big Sky activities are not to miss.
Winter in Big Sky is a downhill skier’s oasis it can also be an oasis of sorts for those less interested in the downhill variety. Big Sky is certainly known for the mountain and all that it provides for skiers and snowboarders however, there are many facets of this community and with that, brings many opportunities for the non-skiers in the family. Below are just a few of our favorite Big Sky activities that don’t include ski lifts.
Dog Sledding Adventures
Fun for the whole family, a dog sledding adventure at Moonlight Basin with Spirit of the North is surely to make your winter list of favorites. Whether you have little ones or a grandparent to entertain, dog sledding at Moonlight allows the non-skier to enjoy some crisp clean air and leaves everyone feeling adventurous at the end of the day. Spirit of the North is weather dependent but operates December through April most years and is something you will want to plan ahead for as days do book up.
Yellowstone National Park
Explore and discover more of Montana with a day in America’s first National Park. At just 45 minutes away from the Big Sky community, Yellowstone National Park has an entire ecosystem ready to be unlocked through the experience of a full-day guided snow coach tour, an amazing snowmobile excursion, or an afternoon of serenity out on the snowshoe and Nordic trails.
Nordic Skiing
Broaden your horizons with a different kind of skiing – Nordic skiing! Also known as cross-country skiing or XC, this energizing outdoor sport provides a more mellow day outside but still stretches the legs and the lungs. With rentals and public trails available at Lone Mountain Ranch (located in the Meadow Village) and private community trails at Moonlight Basin, as well as Spanish Peaks Mountain Club, there really is no excuse not to get outside and give this fun outdoor sport a chance.
Local Arts
If you have a love for the arts or simply enjoy an entertaining night out, the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center (commonly known as the WMPAC) is a fresh breath of culture in our ever-growing community. With performances available throughout the year, there are shows not to be missed each month. Musicals, plays, community theater, dance, live music the list goes on and so must the show.
Snowshoeing
Last but certainly not least, snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the Big Sky throughout the winter months. With rentals available at sporting stores around Big Sky and public trails near both the Mountain Village (Beehive Basin) and the Meadow Village (Ousel Falls, Hummocks, Uplands).
This is really just the short list if you don’t see a Big Sky activity you think you’d enjoy, just let us know and we’ll help find something that you will!
